MJ has started a new SUBSTACK channel, which began in Spring of 2026. It’s entitled “ZEN TEA FARMER” and there you will find several articles so far published. If you click on the SECOND article “A Hermit Returns: Navigating the World of Dust” you will find there a summary of my Zen and Tea Life story, how I became who I am now while following this Path. It may fill in some blanks for those of you new to this page or to my work in this cultural field.
NEWS AND MEDIA ARTICLES
The following two articles recently appeared in COMSTOCK’S (one in their online magazine and one in hard print distribution)
Although I am grateful for the publicity and interest of their magazine, I wasn’t super stoked about several SERIOUS journalistic blunders the reporter made regarding important FACTS mis-stated and/or mis-represented. I am guessing there were some language issues that caused some misunderstandings as the reporter had an accent and I could tell english wasn’t her first language. She did not quite “get” some of the things I said… and did not record the conversations, had to rely on notes. I will outline these corrections here:
ONLINE ARTICLE CORRECTIONS: 1) I incorportate Tea into my morning Zen practice (not yoga, as stated in the first paragraph). 2) I met my teacher 22 years ago (not 27 as stated), studied with him for 7 years 3) Final quote was made up. I had said something to the effect of: “I like how Zen and Tea has helped me to move in the world and relate to the world. The way the quote ended up actually made me CRINGE!!!
PRINTED ARTICLE CORRECTIONS: 1) I AM READY to begin propagating tea for commercial cultivation and production. The second to the last paragraph says the opposite. 2) I primarily practice Gongfu Cha - “CHA DAO” is a general term for Tea Practice, not “Japanese Tea Ceremony” as stated in the last paragraph. This was a major blunder - the writer somehow did not remember that the title of the FIRST ARTICLE she wrote in which I am also featured below (online) was all about Chinese Tea - CONGFU CHA, not Japanese Tea. How do “journalists” get this stuff so wrong? There was also a sense of “externalizaton” of my Tea experience in how she wrote the article, which also felt totally off… I guess this stuff happens all the time. I tend to shy away from “media” in general in talking about what I do. My experience overall about these articles was a mixed bag.
